KANNA
Kanna is an extract of a naturally
occurring succulent plant in South Africa
called Sceletium Tortuosum.
The most important active ingredient in Kanna are alkaloids called mesembrine, mesembrenone,
mesembrenol, and tortuosamine. Mesembrine and mesembrenone are what are called “Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors” (SSRIs) and “Phosphodiesterase
4” (PDE4) inhibitors. These alkaloids activate the natural chemicals in the human body for positive effects.
Much like the Kava from the South Pacific, Kanna can elevate mood and relieve anxiety. On top of that, the plant can reproduce euphoria at higher doses; this initial stimulation is ultimately followed by relaxation. Some have noted enhanced tactile and sexual responses as another consequence of Kanna.
Kanna, as a substance, is most typically found in a powder form. Some users prefer to use it as a snuff substance. To do this, 500mg is the suggested amount for one to feel the substantial effects of the plant.
If ingested in another manner, one may require up to 1.5g of Kanna to feel the full effects. Some prefer to chew on the powder with a piece of gum. Additionally, many prefer to ingest the powder orally and wash it down with their favorite beverage. Finally, like Kava, Kanna can be brewed into a tea. In order to mediate the taste, honey or some other sweetener is recommended. Regarding the negative effects of Kanna, they are few and far between.
The enhanced feeling of euphoria experienced at higher doses can be considered too much by some. However, this is simply mitigated by managing one’s intake of the powder. Like all treatments, Kanna should be taken in moderation. However, the ability to alleviate anxiety and elevate mood has the potential to benefit many people that struggle with depression and/or anxiety.
Because Sceletium Tortuosum is an SSRI, it is not recommended to be taken with any other SSRI’s (such as Seroxat or Prozac) or any Mono Oxidase Inhibitors (such as Syrian Rue, Banisteriopsis Caapi, Passionflower, or Yohimbe). Additionally, it can be unwise to mix this plant with any anti-depressants.
Because Kanna is a natural remedy, it is recommended to use this plant instead of pharmacy-provided, ineffective anti-depressants.
